What You'll Need
Gather the following materials to begin your project:
- Laser Pointer (preferably green)
- Fine Grained Photo Film or Silver Halide Plate
- Optical Bench or Stable Surface
- Black Cardboard (for light shielding)
- Transparent Adhesive (not too thick)
The Process
Follow these steps carefully to create your holographic layer:
- Setup: Begin by placing the laser pointer on the optical bench. Ensure it’s stable and straight. This laser source will create the interference patterns necessary for the hologram.
- Shielding: Use the black cardboard to shield any stray light. Position it around the setup while leaving an opening for the laser beam to shine on your film or plate.
- Recording: Point the laser at the photo film at a slight angle (about 15 degrees). Let the film record the interference pattern for about 5 minutes. This is crucial; any adjustment in angle can affect the quality.
- Development: If using silver halide, develop the film as per standard procedures. For fine grained photo film, carefully wash it in a bath of distilled water mixed with a small amount of fixer for about 10 minutes.
- Assembly: Once dry, attach the holographic layer to a stable surface using the transparent adhesive. Ensure it’s flat and wrinkle-free.
Viewing Tips
To see the best results, view your holographic layer in a dimly lit environment at a slight angle. Move slowly around the layer to observe the depth.
