Chartreuse Clouds Instructions

To find the chartreuse clouds, begin in the northwest corner of your garden, the one where the rhubarb refuses to grow. Stand still until three songs from a forgotten radio station play in your mind. Then take exactly seven steps toward the sun, avoiding any shadows that fall at an angle less than 45 degrees.

Upon reaching the old fence, pause and listen for the sound of imaginary trains. When you hear it, turn left and walk until you see the third post, which will appear crooked at precisely 7:14 AM—or not at all. Count the knots in the wood; a number divisible by three means you should take a detour to count the holes in the barn's roof.

Should the day turn overcast, look skyward and squint. Chartreuse clouds have a way of hiding between the slightly discolored grey layers. If they elude you, remember: north is always the direction in which the wind whispers secrets about your last meal.
